10 Books on Black Muslims and Anti-Black Racism in History

7/4/2020

Islam is a religion that teaches racial equality and is utterly opposed to racism. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) actively preached racial equality and fought against racism, particularly anti-black racism.

Unfortunately, anti-black racism continues to be an issue in Muslim communities around the world. To combat the human cancer of anti-black racism, several authors and historians have written valuable works on the issue and the valuable contributions of black Muslims in history.

While not an exhaustive list on anti-black racism, below is a list of 10 books to understand the contribution and legacy of black Muslims in history.
  1. Illuminating the Darkness: The Virtues of Blacks and Abyssinians by Ibn al-Jawzi

Written by the renowned religious scholar from Iraq, Ibn al-Jawzi wrote this book in the 12th century after he came across disheartened East Africans over their dark skin colour. Ibn al-Jawzi compiled this treatise outlining the virtues and accomplishments of notable black figures in Islamic history. Drawing upon the Qur'an, hadith and Arabic poetry, the book presents the origin of black people, the cause of their skin colour, and praiseworthy qualities amongst black Africans.

2. Slave Rebellion in Brazil: The Muslim Uprising of 1835 in Bahia by João José Reis

Muslim slave uprising in Bahia in 1835, though unsuccessful in winning freedom for the rebels, had national repercussions, making it the most important urban slave rebellion in the Americas and the only one in which Islam played a major role. Reis draws on hundreds of police and trial records in which Africans, despite obvious intimidation, spoke out about their cultural, social, economic, religious, and domestic lives in Salvador. This well-researched book is the most important work on the various uprisings of African Muslims in 19th century Brazil.

3. Servants of Allah: African Muslims Enslaved in the Americas by Sylviane A. Diouf

An illuminating exploration on the history of enslaved African Muslims in the Americas. This fascinating book details how enslaved Muslims preserved their faith, and even drew conviction from their faith to lead a number of uprisings. Written in great detail, the book explores how Islam played a pivotal role in the lives of enslaved Africans and influenced notable rebellions that shook the ruling elite at the time.
Picture
4. Islam and the Blackamerican: Looking Toward the Third Resurrection by Sherman A. Jackson

This book reads like a textbook, which is expected considering it is written by a professor. Dr. Sherman Jackson offers a vigorous examination of Islam among black people in America. Jackson notes that no one has offered a convincing explanation of why Islam spread among Blackamericans but not among white Americans or Hispanics.

5. Illuminating the Darkness: Blacks and North Africans in Islam by Habeeb Akande

A primer on the issue of racial discrimination and colour prejudice in Islamic history. Part l of the book explores the concept of race, 'blackness', slavery, interracial marriage and racism in Islam in the light of the Qur'an, Hadith and early historical sources. Part ll of the book consists of a compilation of short biographies of noble black and North African Muslim men and women in Islamic history including Prophets, Companions of the Prophet and more recent historical figures.

Picture
6. Illuminating the Blackness: Blacks and African Muslims in Brazil by Habeeb Akande

An exploration of the history of Brazil's race relations and African Muslim heritage. Divided into two parts, the book explores a range of topics including; anti-black racism, colourism, African Muslims' travels to Brazil before the Portuguese colonisers, the slave revolts and contemporary Muslim communities in Brazil. Examining the growing conversion of Afro-Brazilians to Islam, the book also investigates the complexities of race in Brazil and draws comparisons with the racial histories of the pre-modern Muslim world.

7. Beyond Timbuktu: An Intellectual History of Muslim West Africa by Ousmane Oumar Kane

Timbuktu is famous as a center of learning from Islam’s Golden Age. Yet it was one among many scholarly centers to exist in precolonial West Africa. Ousmane Kane charts the rise of Muslim learning in West Africa from the beginning of Islam to the present day and corrects lingering misconceptions about Africa’s Muslim heritage and its influence.
Picture
8. Deeper Roots: Muslims in the Caribbean Before Columbus to the Present by Abdullah Hakim Quick

This easy to read book is an attempt to dispel some of the misconceptions about Islamic history in the Americas and to help put into perspective the actual achievements and travels of Muslim explorers, merchants and settlers. The author argues that Muslims played a significant role in the West long before European explorers. He also reveals how Muslims fought for freedom during the slavery period and how even today Islam's roots can be seen in the names and ancestry of people living in America and the Caribbean.
Picture
9. Educating Muslim Women: The West African Legacy of Nana Asma'u, 1793-1864 by Jean Boyd and Beverly Mack

Nana Asma'u was a devout, learned Muslim from 19th century Nigeria who was able to observe, record, interpret, and influence the major public events that happened around her. She is also the daughter of Uthman don Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate in northern Nigeria. In this richly illustrated book with maps and photographs, the authors recount Asma'u's upbringing and critical junctures in her life from several sources. She remains a revered figure in northern Nigeria.
Picture
10. The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm x and Alex Haley

An awe-inspiring read detailing the religious, spiritual and political growth of one of the most admired men in recent history. Malcolm X, also known as El-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, was a human rights campaigner, public speaker and strong advocate for black Muslims in America. The book also covers the fundamental role that Malcolm's elder sister, Ella Collins played in his life. Collins introduced him to Islam, funded his historic trip to Mecca and instilled black pride in a young Malcolm. The book is an amazing and insightful read on fighting for racial justice, spiritual transformation, and the importance of speaking truth to power. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand anti-black racism in America.

The Orgasm Gap - BBC Documentary on Kunyaza

What did you learn about sexual pleasure when you were growing up?

Chances are, you didn't learn much in school. And if the latest research is anything to go by, we still have a lot to learn now.

According to a US based study, 95% of heterosexual men said they usually-always orgasm during sex, in comparison to 65% of heterosexual. This notable difference is known as 'the orgasm gap' (or the pleasure gap'). Is there a way to bring more equity into the pleasure equation?

To find out more, this BBC documentary presents a candid examination of whether Rwanda experiences a more open attitude to discussion about sexual pleasure, or is there is still a long way to go before pleasure equality is really found.

In the UK, when the new sex education guidelines are introduced in September 2020, sexual pleasure will remain off the agenda.

The documentary talks to people in the UK and Rwanda to explore how society and culture influence how we experience pleasure. The documentary looks at what we were, or weren't, taught about sex at school and meets a man who is finding ways to close the gender pleasure gap outside of the classroom.

In Rwanda the documentary finds out about (kunyaza) a cultural practice that allegedly puts female pleasure first, but is also linked to a controversial form of female genital modification.

The World Health Organisation defined labia elongation as female genital mutilation, but this was changed and has remained modification since 2008.

Listen to The Orgasm Gap documentary on BBC World Service, 7.06pm on 30 May 2020.

"The BBC World Service is talking about sex, and never more frankly than here" - Steve Titherington, Senior Commissioning Editor, BBC World Service

The documentary is produced by Lily Freeston & Kayleen Devlin for BBC World Service and features sex educator Habeeb Akande and Rwandan sexologist Vestine Dusabe. The documentary is a recommended watch according to The Times and Radio Times.

The Orgasm Gap documentary is part of the BBC's Life Changes series of global stories of how the world's changes have changed people's lives.

BBC Woman's Hour - Male Sexual Desire - what we want and like from sex

The latest statistics suggest young British people are having less sex than ever before. Could this be because it can be so hard to be open about what we like, and

what we want, from sex? Do our gender expectations make it particularly hard for straight men to admit they like a submissive role in sex? What about when the sexual act itself comes with elements of stigma or taboo - like anal play? We discuss how straight men can talk about sexual desire with female partners and why this matters. Shakira ‘Scotty’ Scott is an erotic romance author and blogger. Habeeb Akande is a sexual well-being educator. Matthew is 30 and has been married for two years.

Kunyaza is becoming very popular in Nigeria!

The discovery of kunyaza was a turning point in my career as a senga (sex educator)!

It was a miracle. So many years of looking for the easiest and fastest way to achieve orgasm as a woman had finally came to an end. Here in northern Nigeria, we have very little knowledge on sex and sensuality. So you can only imagine my excitement when I came across the books KUNYAZA and A TASTE OF HONEY. The content in these two books where eye opening and enlightening. After just days of reading, I sat down with my first set of women to teach them the art of kunyaza. I followed every little detail in the book.

Initially, it was a lot harder for women to reach their peak i.e. climax or even have an orgasm. It was a constant discussion amongst the ladies on how achieve an orgasm. Different methods were discussed, different methods were experimented on to absolutely no avail until the discovery of KUNYAZA.
Picture
Of course I told them I needed to get a feedback the next day after they had done it with their husbands. All the ladies were able to achieve orgasm with kunyaza on their first try. It was the first time for majority of the ladies to achieve orgasm.

What once seemed impossible, gradually became a beautiful way of achieving maximum satisfaction.

Trust me when I say kunyaza is an addictive method of achieving orgasm, because a woman can get satisfaction with it alone even without penetrative sex. The men also enjoy the art of kunyaza from the constant reviews I keep getting from them. Kunyaza is becoming very popular in Nigeria.

Kunyaza is mostly done during foreplay before penetrative sex, it is also done during coitus when the man has grown weak or when the act is becoming boring to stir more heat into the intercourse.

The woman can take hold of the man’s penis and initiate the act while he focuses on other erogenous zones of her body, like sucking her breast while using his hands to massage her scalp. This adds more pleasure and heightens the kunyaza experience, giving her a mind blowing orgasm.
Picture
We decided to add a few tricks to make it even more explosive.

1. Massage either the clit or head of the penis with our “B oil” (which is a popular aphrodisiac “Kayan mata “ down here in Nigeria).

2. Cover the woman’s nipples with a little bit of honey or melted chocolate (depending on the man’s favourite) before sucking.

3. The woman has to make sure her hair is loose for the man to put his fingers inside her hair and massage her scalp.

4. Apply a little bit of sexual perfume behind the ears or inside the hair if the man is going to end up licking and sucking her ears with his mouth.

For a lot of women that experience vaginal dryness during sex or have to use off-the-counter lubricant, natural lubrication can be achieved with kunyaza.
Picture
As soon as the act begins, a lot of women are not able to control themselves due to the multiple waves of excitement that fills up their bodies.

Kunyaza makes communication a lot easier between couples. Being able to tell your partner what you want, what works for you and what doesn’t. If you feel pleasure or not.

Kunyaza has been a wonderful discovery and it is simply amazing how Nigerians are loving the art and including it in their sex life to achieve maximum satisfaction.

SECRETS TO FEMALE PLEASURE – KUNYAZA WORKSHOP WITH HABEEB AKANDE AND SHERRYL BLU

12/15/2019

Join author Habeeb Akande and sex blogger Sherryl Blu for an intimate and interactive discussion on kunyaza – Africa’s secret to female pleasure!

Kunyaza is a sexual practice from Africa which triggers female ejaculation and multiple orgasms in women during heterosexual encounters. Originally from Rwanda, the kunyaza sexual technique has been practiced for hundreds of years between couples throughout Africa. It's an effective technique for squirting orgasms.

In traditional African cultures, women comes first. For many Africans, kunyaza is a solution to the orgasm gap and the rest of the world should pay attention. The West can learn much about this centuries-old sensual practice which has the reputation of causing explosive wet orgasms without penetration.

DISCOVER KUNYAZA
According to Rwandan legend, kunyaza originated with an ancient queen who experienced a squirting orgasm whose flow was copious that it formed Lake Kivu. The motion which provoked the squirt became known as the kunyaza technique, whilst the ejaculated fluid was called kunyara.

As for the kunyaza technique, it involves the stimulation of the clitoris and labia minora with the penis using a series of tapping and rubbing motions. As the woman becomes relaxed and highly aroused by the tapping motion, a gush of fluid is likely to expel from her lady parts.

CLOSING THE PLEASURE GAP WITH KUNYAZA
The “pleasure gap” refers to the pleasure disparity between male and female sex partners. Unfortunately women are four times more likely to find sex less pleasurable than men! During sexual encounters, men orgasm 20% to 50% more than women. This is a phenomenon known as the “orgasm gap” between heterosexual men and women.
Kunyaza can help close the pleasure and orgasm gap. Afterall, it’s a sexual practice dedicated to female pleasure and can trigger an orgasm in women within five minutes!

Some benefits of the African lovemaking technique include;

  • facilitates female ejaculation and / or squirting;
  • enhances female pleasure;
  • stimulates the K-Spot (internal and external clitoris); and
  • helps men last longer in the bedroom

WHAT TO EXPECT AT OUR KUNYAZA WORKSHOP

The purpose of the workshop is to raise awareness and celebrate the contributions of African sex educators to female sexuality.

The workshop will be hosted by sex educator Habeeb Akande and sex blogger Sherryl Blu who will lead the discussions. Audience members are free to participate or they can sit back and enjoy an entertaining evening of educational fun! In case you are wondering, the workshop is fully dressed and will not include a live demonstration of female squirting! Men and women are both welcome to attend.

At the workshop, you will learn about the importance of erotology (art of lovemaking) in traditional African cultures and how to close the orgasm gap. Did you know that heterosexual women have fewer orgasms than men or lesbians or bisexual women during partnered sex? This needs to change! Straight men need to learn how to pleasure women and not rely on porn for sex education!

Some questions we will explore during the workshop include; why are most women not sexually satisfied? what does it mean to be sexually liberated?, and can every woman squirt?

In addition, you will learn about the female anatomy & arousal, why foreplay matters and the mysteries of female ejaculation. Although many women squirt with kunyaza, the main goal of the sexual practice is mutual pleasure and sexual satisfaction.

Closing the Pleasure Gap With The Village Auntie

11/10/2019

Women are four times more likely to say sex wasn't pleasurable compared to men. A phenomenon known as the “pleasure gap.” Men orgasm 20% to 50% more than women during sexual encounters ("orgasm gap"). Sex and wellness coach, The Village Auntie, aims to close these gaps with her expert advice on female pleasure, African sexual techniques and more!
Picture
Who is the Village Auntie?
Angelica Lindsey-Ali is a certified sexual health educator and wellness coach with over 20 years of experience in sex education. Popularly known as The Village Auntie, Lindsey-Ali provides one-to-one coaching and women-only workshops on sex, intimacy, and womanhood from an African and Islamic perspective.

Lindsey-Ali is a pioneer in Muslim sex education and a leading expert of kunyaza (an African technique to elicit female ejaculation/squirting and female orgasm). Traditionally in Africa, women known as ssengas, would teach this technique to women who in turn in turn teach it to their partners.

Drawing upon her clinical, cultural and religious training, Lindsey-Ali brings her wealth of experience and expertise to teach ladies the secrets of female pleasure in a holistic and intimate way.

“In traditional African societies, there was always at least one woman in the village, a teacher and guide. Parents send their daughters to her when they begin their menses. She advises young brides in the weeks leading up to marriage. We have lost connection with these old folkways. My mission is to reclaim them. We owe it to ourselves, our sisters, our daughters. I am striving to be a guide back to the ways of our foremothers. Sex is not something we have to shy away from. Our beloved Rasulallah (saws) taught us to not have shame when learning about our deen. Sex is a part of life. #TheVillageAuntie can teach you,” Lindsey-Ali says.
Picture
What is The Village Auntie Movement?
The Village Auntie Movement was started by Lindsey-Ali to address the wealth of misinformation in the Muslim community, particularly amongst Muslim women about sexual health and sexual pleasure from an Islamic perspective.

“The Village Auntie movement is not really about sex.” Lindsey-Ali explains, “It is about empowerment and the reclamation of culture.”

The Pleasure and Orgasm Gap
The “pleasure gap” refers to the sexual pleasure disparity between men and women. Statistically, women are four times more likely to find sex less pleasurable than men. The most important factors of pleasure for women involve clitoral stimulation and physical contact (touching and kissing).

During sex, 65% of heterosexual women usually-always orgasm, compared to 95% of heterosexual men, according to a US study of 52,588 people. 86% of lesbian women and 89% of gay men usually-always orgasm during sex, the study found. This disparity is known as the “orgasm gap.”

The fact that lesbian women orgasmed more often than heterosexual women indicates that many heterosexual women could experience higher rates of orgasm. Cultural ignorance of the clitoris is considered to be the number one reason for the orgasm gap according to sex therapist and psychologist Laurie Mintz.

In Muslim communities, women’s right to sexual pleasure and orgasm is rarely discussed due to cultural reasons. The Village Auntie is on a mission to close the pleasure gap in Black and Muslim communities by empowering women to understand their right to sexual pleasure.

Exploring African femininity and sacred sensuality, The Village Auntie offers intimate women-only workshops, seminars and one to one sex coaching with tips on reaching sexual fulfilment, the kunyaza sexual technique, and 15 routes to the female orgasm.

“Women have a right to pleasure. Women have a right to orgasm,” Lindsey Ali says

Closing the Pleasure Gap With Kunyaza
The majority of women experience female ejaculation from the kunyaza technique, according to The Village Auntie, who says,

"
Kunyaza has been extremely effective, even for women who thought they’d never be able to ejaculate. If I have taught the technique to 100 (female) students, roughly, I would say 95 of them are able to achieve female ejaculation by using kunyaza. This is of course, based on self-reporting."

Women who experience ejaculation say that is feels pleasurable. Many women describe the sensation of squirting as more powerful than a clitoral or vaginal orgasm. Others describe it as “extremely gratifying,” “the ultimate sexual expression,” and "the best feeling."

Kunyaza Workshop on Female Ejaculation and the G-Spot

A discussion round with sex educator Habeeb Akande and Dr Sarah Younan on kunyaza - an ancient practice triggering female ejaculation/gushing, and traditional African sex education centering female pleasure.

Hosted by Watch Africa Cymru in Cardiff, Wales, the workshop took place on 12 August 2019, few days after International Female Orgasm Day (8 August). The workshop was followed by the film screening of 'Sacred Water,' a documentary exploring kunyaza in Rwanda.

Using the wondrous vulva puppet and a 3-D clitoris model, Akande demonstrates how to locate the G-Spot and K-Spot (internal and external clitoris) to induce squirting orgasms.

According to Akande, kunyaza can help close the orgasm gap between heterosexual couples.

According to a 2016 study from the Archives of Sexual Behavior that looked at over 52,500 adults in the U.S. — including those who are lesbian, gay, and bisexual — 95 percent of heterosexual men reported they usually or always orgasmed during sex, compared to 65 percent of heterosexual women, who were the least likely.

Habeeb Akande is a sex educator and author of Kunyaza: The Secret to Female Pleasure.
